There are three basic types of pulleys used in the typical lawn mower spare parts: sealed bearing pulleys, lubricate bearing pulleys, and bearingless pulleys. Each type of pulley serves a specific purpose and all contribute to the overall operational stability of the machine.
All bearingless mower pulleys are attached to a solid steel shaft that drives another pulley. The most common pulley of this type is found on the bottom of a lawn mower engine in the form of a crankshaft pulley. These lawn mower pulleys are used to transmit power from the engine to the same type of pulley that is mounted on the machine's gearbox, allowing the lawn mower to propel itself on the lawn. These types of pulleys are usually multi-grooved pulleys or laminated pulleys. This pulley design allows the engine to not only power the transmission, but also deliver power to the mower platform via another separate drive belt.
Most pulleys on a typical riding lawn mower are located on the mowing platform. Each mower blade is equipped with an individual pulley driven by the main mower deck belt. These pulleys are usually sealed bearing pulleys that require no lubrication or maintenance other than being kept clean and grass free. Allowing shear debris to accumulate on and around the pulley will cause overheating and bearing failure. Use a small brush, broom, or air hose to remove trimmings and debris after each mowing.
A tensioner pulley is also located on the mower deck to maintain proper belt tension on the cutting blade pulley. These lawn mower pulleys are usually mounted on steel plates and are spring-loaded to maintain constant pressure on the lawn mower deck belt, preventing blade slippage. The spring tension that pulls these pulleys is just enough to tighten the belt, but not so tight that it causes premature wear of the sealed bearings of the blade pulleys. These tensioned lawn mower pulleys typically use lubricate bearings and require servicing before each use.
