How to Measure a Lawn Mower Belt?

Lawnmowers are often heavily used during the mowing season, which can cause some of their parts to weaken. Not all parts of a lawn mower are as durable as the machine.

You may need to replace some parts while using it. For example, straps can become weak or break with frequent use. You need accurate measurements of your lawn mower belt for a successful replacement.

Most lawnmowers, especially ride-on mowers, come with two belts. One of the belts connects the lawn tractor's transmission to the drive shaft pulley. Another belt connects the mower deck to the drive shaft pulley, this one is called the deck belt.

The length of these straps depends on the make and model of your lawn mower. These straps can become loose or break with overuse. When it starts to weaken, you may need to measure them in order to buy new ones.

Cut the Belt - If the belt is already broken, you don't need to cut it. But if it's slack and hasn't broken, cut the strap with a knife.

Place the Leash on a Flat Surface - Place the leash on a smooth floor, bench, or any flat surface. Keep it from rolling up by placing heavy objects on both ends.

Use Tape Measure to Measure the Belt - Put the measuring tape on one end and roll it to the other end to determine the length of the belt.

Place the Leash on a Table or Flat Surface - Let the leash lie flat and it will roll into a circle when unwound.

Mark the Edge of the Belt - On the inside edge of the belt, make a mark using chalk or a bright marker. Position the mark at the tip of the V-groove of the belt.

Measuring the Belt - Place the end of the tape measure on the marked tip. Then extend the tape measure in a circle until the other end reaches the mark you made. The reading on the tape is your belt length.

As we mentioned, the mower deck belt connects the deck to the drive shaft pulley. It's the rubber strap inside that facilitates the movement of the mower's parts.

If this belt is lost, it will need to be replaced. But you need to determine the size first.

But if the belt is lost, you must determine its size before buying a new one.

To measure a missing deck strap, you need to measure how far the round part of the deck wraps the strap. The circular part is called the main shaft pulley.

1. Remove the Cutterhead - Use a screwdriver or wrench to separate the cutter head from the bottom of the machine. After this, you should be able to see the spindle pulley and deck belt.

2. Find All the Pulleys - You should find anywhere from four to six pulleys on the deck, depending on size. Observe the circumference of the main shaft pulleys and assign a number to each pulley. Note that the belt must be large enough to go around each spindle pulley at the same time.

3. Measure Each Distance of the Circular Part (Spindle Pulley) - Use a tape measure to determine the distance from one spindle pulley to the next and write down each measurement on a piece of paper or notebook. That is, the distance between the main shaft pulleys goes from 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and so on until you measure them all.

To determine your belt size, add up all your measurements. The sum is the total distance around the spindle pulley and deck belt dimensions.

Belts are an important part of the equipment. It connects the engine to the machine parts that make it move. So without it, your lawn mower will stop functioning.

5. Belt Falling off the Mower - If the drive belt keeps falling off the mower, the belt may be damaged. It could be loose, which could cause it to slip out of the pulleys while in use.
