How to Change Lawn Mower Spark Plug?

Spark plugs may be a small part of your lawn mower, but they are quite important. If the spark plugs are old or not working properly, your lawn mower's engine may have difficulty starting or running. If you start having any of these problems, it's a good idea to check your spark plugs.

For lawn mower spark plugs, the maximum lifespan is two years. Although this is the longest lifespan, it is not the ideal lifespan. To keep your engine performing at its best, it is recommended to change the spark plugs annually or after the engine has been running for 30 hours. Since your lawn mower requires regular annual maintenance, it's easiest to replace your spark plugs as part of your routine maintenance.

Replacing your lawn mower's spark plugs doesn't require many tools. A normal socket or a wrench and spark plug socket can be used for this job. Beyond that, you'll need a spark plug gap gauge. A spark plug gap gauge is a tool that helps you ensure that your spark plugs are installed to the exact dimensions recommended by the manufacturer.

Replace your lawn mower spark plugs in six easy steps.

1. Find the spark plug. Zero-turn lawnmowers usually have spark plugs on the side near the rear of the engine. For walk-behind and riding lawnmowers, look toward the front of the engine.

2. Disconnect the spark plug wire. After disconnecting the spark plug, remove any debris from around the area.

3. Use the spark plug socket or ordinary socket to remove the spark plug.

4. Confirm the spark plug gap. While spark plugs usually come from the manufacturer and are set to the correct gap, it is always wise to verify that it is correct. See your owner's manual for the proper size for your engine.

5. Replace the spark plug. Start with your hands to make sure the threads are properly aligned. After firing the spark plug, use the socket or spark plug socket to tighten until the bottom gasket is compressed.

6. Reinstall the spark plug wire.
